STELLAN happened almost by accident. The vision was clear, a waypoint, but our journey didn’t follow a pre-determined map. One day the tides shifted, and we were on our way. We call it lightning.
Our businesses are founded with the soul purpose of living intentionally, authentically, and with great care. Gone are the days of putting one foot in front of the other, in service of a machine that was created centuries ago, and stoked by greed, control, and power. We are steadfast in our purpose, and we believe that once that purpose becomes sacred, the rest will unfold as it should.
Our flagship store resides on Commercial Street in Portland, Maine, and was happened upon as the former occupants embarked on a new journey, which left us to carry their torch of making this world better, through abundant love. Nestled on the fringe of the historic Old Port, we are drawn to the traditions and seasons of the working waterfront.
Our name. We fumbled with many names before pausing long enough to listen to what had guided us here in the first place. When we returned to our knowings and the people who matter most, their first initials came together to form S T E L L A N. In Scandinavia, it means “peaceful one; calm.” It felt less like a choice and more like a purpose. Our name became the ethos of our brand, a reminder of what we hope to cultivate in every space we touch. Because above all else, there is no better place than our personal sanctuaries, our homes, in which to do so.

Anyone having lived in a space that felt unsettled will tell you that peace in the body is entirely impacted by the energy of whom and what surrounds you. Our team searches the globe for objects, textiles, adornments, and furnishings that will create a perfectly balanced and grounded foundation from which to build upon and infuse with personal touches and curated treasures. From heirloom quality linens for the table, where we share some of our most intimate and cherished moments of connection, to restored vintage rugs crafted on ancient looms by hands far from the coast of Maine, you will find goods that are created by artisans who share our values and our love for fine things. Appreciating the details, the story, the becoming, is part of our process.
A word on color. This is something we talk about every day. We love color; for the mood it inspires. Color adds depth and warmth, sometimes it expresses personality or joy. All of that is personal and beautiful. Critical to our mission is evoking the calm deep breath that our customers describe the moment they walk through our doors. The aesthetic, smells and presence of the space envelops you. Nature gently beckons us toward different colors as the seasons unfold. We follow their rhythm like the tides yet always find our way back to the timeless neutrals that bring a sense of calm and steadfastness to our spaces.
We are grateful to have another seaside community to have put down our roots. Rehoboth Beach, Delaware is special to our founders and a village we have called home for decades. Like the tide itself, which leaves the working waterfront of Portland and journeys southward along the same vast Atlantic, our story finds its way to the shores of Rehoboth Beach, carrying with it the same spirit of calm, beauty, and belonging.
