A STELLAN-designed kitchen in Arundel, Maine

Interior design in
Portland, Maine.

A women-owned studio making rooms that feel calm the moment you walk in, then building them from pieces meant to stay. In person around Maine, and virtually throughout New England and beyond.

A STELLAN-designed kitchen in Arundel, Maine: a wood island, woven stools, and beamed ceiling

Design that begins with how a room should feel.

Most rooms get decorated. We would rather they get understood first. Before we choose a single thing, we talk about how you actually live in a space, what you want to feel when you come home, and what you are tired of working around.

From there we build slowly. The furniture that earns its keep, the light that softens a hard corner, the textiles you will want to touch. We are a women-owned, family-run studio, and we treat your home the way we would want ours treated. Honestly, and without rushing.

Our design work is based in Portland, Maine, and rooted in the coast around it. The fog, the stone, the worn wood of a working harbor. That restraint is the through-line in everything we put in a room.

How We Work

A calm, considered process.

01

Consultation

We sit down, in the space or virtually, and talk through the rooms, your timeline, and a real budget. You leave knowing whether we are the right fit, with no pressure either way.

02

Plan and source

We develop the concept, then source it. Furniture, lighting, textiles, and the small finishing pieces, pulled from makers we trust and from the shop when something fits.

03

Install and style

We bring it all together and style it down to the last object, so the room is finished and livable on the day we hand it back to you.

What We Offer

Whole homes, or a single tired room.

Every project is different, so we propose the right level of service for your space, your scope, and where you are.

Full-service interior design

Concept through install for a whole home or a major renovation. We carry the whole thing so you do not have to.

Virtual design, anywhere

Working from afar throughout New England and beyond. A considered plan, sourcing list, and guidance you carry out on your own timeline.

Single-room refresh

One room that has never felt right. We rework what is there and add what it needs, nothing more.

Styling and finishing

The last ten percent. Shelves, textiles, art, and objects that make a finished room feel like yours.

Jill, Creative Director and Lead Designer at STELLAN

Creative Director · Lead Designer

Meet Jill.

Jill holds a degree from the University of Vermont where she studied Fine Art, and has spent over 25 years as a professional visual artist, exhibiting in galleries across the East and West Coasts. She previously owned and operated her own fine art gallery, representing regional artists while managing a thriving creative business. She currently maintains a studio in a historic train station in Southern Maine, where she produces artwork for her representing galleries.

Jill's deep understanding of color, composition, and form has naturally evolved into a passion for interior design and the building process. As a general contractor on multiple residential projects, she has guided homes from conceptualization to completion, bringing thoughtful spatial planning and a trained artist's eye to every detail.

Rooted in STELLAN's philosophy of designing with intention, Jill believes in creating spaces that are both functional and beautiful, spaces that invite connection, honor meaningful pieces, and reflect the way we wish to live in our homes.

Questions

Good to know.

Where do you offer interior design?

STELLAN Design is based in our Portland, Maine studio at 271 Commercial Street, offering virtual design throughout New England and beyond. Every project is different, so we propose services based on your location and scope.

How does a project start?

It starts with a consultation. We talk through the rooms, how you want them to feel, your timeline and your budget, then we put together a plan before any sourcing begins.

Do you only use STELLAN products?

No. We pull from the shop when a piece is right, but we source widely from makers and vendors so the room fits you, not our inventory.

What does interior design cost?

It depends on the scope, from a single room to a whole home. We are transparent about fees in the consultation so there are no surprises.
